Learning how to create your website is step two in my series of “Build Your Online Business”. If you’ve been following this series, you’ll know I told you there are four basic steps to building a successful online business from home. Choosing your market and niche is step one. Create Your Website is step two.
Many people are confounded when it comes to how to create a website from scratch. It’s no wonder since creating a website requires specialized software. Creating a website used to require complicated knowledge of how to code website software. Years ago novice website builders had no choice but to rely on website designers to build their sites.
I’ve been coaching business owners for ten years. Until a few years ago, I fell short when it came time to helping a business owner take their business online because I thought building a website was complicated and expensive. It seemed like one gigantic puzzle that I had neither the brain power nor the skills to figure it out.
Fast forward to today and I can confidently say, I am fearless when it comes to building a website and you can be too. In fact, not only have I created AskCoachRebecca.com, I have created over a dozen money making websites.
“I am fearless when it comes to creating my own money-making website. With my “No-Fail” system you can be too.”
You’ll find more detail about each of these steps in my Getting Started Guide. This post is intended to be a simple overview. Listed below are the steps to take to create your website.
Step One: Choose Your Niche
I’ve already covered this step in my previous article about the importance of choosing your niche. Experienced online marketers know that making money with a website starts with selecting a money making niche.
If you want to dig a little deeper into this topic, feel free to take a look at my training tutorial, “Show Me The Money-How to Quickly Identify Your Money Making Niche”.
The key to selecting a great niche is to choose something you are really passionate about that people spend money on. If you are passionate about growing orchids, you could create a money making website all about orchids. If you know something about Ipads, you could create a website reviewing the hottest Ipad games or maybe create a website about accessories for Ipads.
Any niche that you know something about and have a real interest in could be a profitable niche to make money online. Just be sure you choose something that you will love adding content to.
Step Two: Register Your Domain Name
Before you can launch your website online, you must register a domain name. Your domain name establishes your URL–Universal Resource Locator.
Think of the internet as a gigantic yellow page book of advertisements. In order for prospective customers to find you, you need to have a domain name. Your domain name is followed by an extension which is most often .com, .net, or .org. I recommend getting a .com extension.
Many people start out with a keyword rich domain name like “makemoneywithawebsite.com”. A name like that is keyword rich. It’s OK to pick a keyword rich domain name but it’s better to use a brandable domain name. Names like “fitbe.com”, “amazon.com” and “huffingtonpost.com” are easy to remember, easy to type into a search engine and easy to brand.
In general, I recommend that you pick a domain name that you can brand. Don’t use hyphens and try to avoid words that are hard to spell or say and avoid numbers if at all possible.
To register your domain name, you need to go to a reliable domain name registrar. I have had experience with a few registrars. My top pick is NameCheap. I like NameCheap for a few reasons.
- They are reputable. You don’t have to worry about them stealing your brand name.
- They have an easy Domain Name Transfer Service. You can transfer your domain name to your website host with a couple of entries and a couple of clicks.
- There are no annoying up sells. What you see is what you get with NameCheap. There is no “bait and switch” where they lure you in with a ridiculously low price and then hit you up later when it comes time to renew your domain name.
Be sure to request my Getting Started Guide. I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about picking a great domain name.
Step Three: Transfer Your Domain Name to a Host
After you register your domain name, you need to transfer your name to a reliable website host. There is a good deal to know about hosting your website. Choosing a reliable host is important to the long-term operation of your site.
There are a few non-negotiable items when it comes to picking a good website host. You want to make sure the host you pick has a 99% up time. Nothing is worse for your goal of making money with a website than to have your site up and down repeatedly like I had with Brainhost and Fatcow. I picked those companies because they were cheap but I got stung.
The other big consideration is finding a host that is easy to use and offers great support. I had a terrible experience with Brainhost when it came to support. I have had excellent experience with Bluehost, HostGator and Wealthy Affiliate. My top choice is Wealthy Affiliate because I can host an unlimited number of websites for one low monthly fee and their website launching pad is an absolute no brainer.
In terms of hosting service, Wealthy Affiliate offers:
- WordPress optimized servers
- The most secure hosting anywhere
- Full redundancy
- Daily backups
- 24/7 website monitoring
- Fully managed
- Email & forwards
- Site Health analyzing
- Website auto login
Changing your domain name to a host is easy-peasy. Please believe me on this…it took me longer to write this section than it will take you to transfer your domain name server (DNS) to the host server that I recommend for building and hosting your website.
Domain name server transfers are a simple matter of selection, point and click. It is an easy two-minute process that I am happy to walk you through. In fact, I have created a training video in my Getting Started Guide to help you.
Step Four: Choose a Website Building Platform
Years ago, building a website was complicated. You had to learn CSS/HTML code in order to create a website. Some platforms are still operating from a technical knowledge base.
Not so with WordPress. WordPress is the most widely used platform for building websites. WordPress coders have made it easy for non-tech people like me to launch a website in no time.
If you like complication, you could pick Drupal, Joomla or Dreamweaver but if you are an entrepreneur like me, you want to get your online business up and running as quickly and smoothly as possible. That’s why I love WordPress website platforms.
With over 2,000 themes to choose, I know I can build a website from scratch with ease.
Step Five: Select a Website Theme
WordPress is an open architecture platform with thousands of community developers. Many themes are free to use.
All free themes operate from a Dashboard that helps you organize your site into Pages and Posts. Pages are stationary. Think of them like anchors for navigation. THey help to structure your site. If you look above this post you will see the stationary pages (home, about, coaching, etc.) in my navigation bar.
Posts are where you blog and place your articles. Posts are date sensitive; pages are not. You can add hundreds of posts to your blog roll and they will not appear in your primary navigation bar. Adding posts to your website will help you establish your website brand and get your site noticed in the search engines.
Your website theme is what you will use to organize your website content. You can pick a website theme for a Daily Blog, an eCommerce Store, a Magazine Style, a Professional Service Business, a Local Marketing Business or any number of other styles.
My top choice for themes that are both eye-catching and functional are the themes created by Elegant Themes. Elegant Themes offers dozens of themes perfectly suited for a wide variety of website designs. One of the key features with Elegant Theme web designs are the built-in page builders that let you design your pages with complete flexibility. This site is built on Divi. Learn more about it here.
Step Six: Let’s Get Started!
Making money online is all about learning how to leverage existing platforms. Creating a website is much easier when you have the right partners to help you because much of the work can be outsourced.
Over the years of building my online businesses, I have come to learn about which partners I can trust to see me all the way through to launch and which fall short.
Launching a successful online business is like presenting a Broadway musical. You want your customers to be delighted from the opening of the curtain until they leave the theater and enthusiastically tell others about about their experience.
That means you need a front stage and a back stage crew to pull off a successful production. You need someone in your backstage corner to help you with the planning, the staging, the promotion and the selling.
Some online business partners promise to help but their programs have not been updated and they do not have the backstage support to help you when you have questions. Some use proprietary website building software that you can’t take with you if you leave. Others force you to go out and piecemeal all the elements you need.
That’s okay if you have a couple of years to develop your online business. But, if you want to get a fast and reliable start, be sure to read my review of my Top Rated Online Learning Academy.
My goal with this post is to show you how you can create your website with ease and affordability by following these simple steps. Please feel free to email me with your questions and leave your comments in the section below.
